La Fábrica de E... No, mejor...

“it's your funeral”…

--------------------------------------------------

We had seen this place a couple of times before, in one of our trips to the Gothic neighbourhood looking for some furniture for our flat (on thursdays, people throw away old furniture that we like to restore!). For some reason -now we think it might be a sign- we kept delaying the visit to the place, maybe because we found a good big furniture, too big to carry it with us for dinner, some other time because we forgot it was there, then because it was closed, another time we just walked too far and we were too lazy to go back... in the end, we have a theory... the destiny got tired of us and said... OK! If you want to, just go.... “It's your funeral”.

So, in one of our many trips to the Gothic in thursday night, we were hungry and didn't find any nice furniture (many hipsters looking for furniture as well, taking them all, huh!) so no excuse to help us visiting the place, let's say The E. Factory... well, too obvious, better say The Empanadas F. (Thanks Seymour, you're awesome)

This restaurant is a little shop, but it looks great, with a vintage decoration, so on nowadays, with old wooden boxes and tables, a big wooden sign above the entrance... well, you can see they didn't spare no expenses on that. It's a pretty centric zone and it's easy to arrive (I look like a Real Estate Agent now!). Except for if you are going by car. That wasn't our case, so we didn't care. Anyway... if you are going to the Gothic by car... man, your fault!

So, going back to our business... the big wooden sign announces the entrance to the E's F. There were many Argentinian things: alfajores (pastries), chocolates, beer... none of them made in the restaurant, though (we didn't find the prices were so reasonable, so we would recommend to look for a specialized supermarket for buying this kind of groceries). So, the owner was Argentinian, the waitress was french (right?), the few people that were eating there- few because the space for staying there was small- maybe they were argentinian too (we don't know, never asked), and maybe even the boxes and the decoration was from Argentina! Despite this, if there was something that didn't show an argentinian trait, that was the empanadas. Yes, they were empanadas. And yes, the owner was from Argentina. But if I'm a chinese cooking rice, that doesn't make my rice become “three delights rice” (Typical rice served in chinese restaurants here).

The empanadas were displayed in a counter covered by glass, there were many with different fillings. We didn't try them all, but we don't think we'd have to either. The chosen ones were cheese and ham, cheese and onion, caprese and meat.

About the dough, it was all the same. We don't need to say much, it was homemade -that's good- and maybe if the filling was better the thing would have changed. I didn't have so much faith on the dough, not trying to be mean, but there were a lot of empanadas and not so many people eating there, so the numbers wouldn't fit for me... maybe the empanadas had been made the day before, or even two days before -couldn't confirm that- or maybe the cook was inspired, or kind of high that day and overproduced... it's a mistery.

The filling: as you could appreciate, we have a special preference for cheese fillings, and when you choose these you can't help thinking of the hot and creamy cheese that comes out of the empanada when you bite it first (sometimes, when the cook is generous), or when you cut it first, if you're so fancy you use knife and fork, that feel full of flavours characteristic of good mozzarellas... in this case it was completely missing. The filling of these empanadas was lacking of this magic, majesty, perfection that good mozzarella empanadas have. This special touch is simply and easy as having a good oven.

A good oven (we think) is essential if you have empanadas in your restaurant – and even more if your restaurant sells only empanadas). Maybe somebody ends up taking the empanadas to their house and just warming them up in the microwave on saturday midday (sacrilege!)... Anyway... maybe the empanadas were firstly cooked in a good oven, but the truth is when they were served to us they were reheated, attention, in a little electric oven that wasn't even warm enough when the empanadas were put in.

The result was a cheese which was not ready: some parts were melted, some other were cold. Do you know this feeling when there's a half cold half hot empanada? We do now.

Maybe if they had warmed them longer, or the oven was preheated in an appropiate temperature, or maybe if it had been a real oven and not one of those kiddy kitchens... that'd have been good!

In the end, we're pretty sure that fresh made empanadas were great, but it wasn't our time.

Luckily, after dinner we found a very nice wooden door that we decided to adopt for our house. In our way back home a druk hipster came out of a bar to give us some ideas. During 10 minutes he kept imagining how would the door look better in our living room. Yes! OUR living room. The anecdote includes a variety of bizarre ideas. Among them, hanging the door as a picture frame, with a backround made of artificial grass with Pin y Pon ( little dolls we have in here https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5189/5676701013_959f2308d5_z.jpg) doing something.

Conclusion:

Final Marks: 3/10 (one for the ambients, another for the location, another for the dough)

The worst: The half cold half hot empanadas

The best: The door we found in our way back home

The sentence of the night: They lost us even before they earnt us

PS: Mr Hipster with ideas for our door: we didn't use the artifical grass... but we almost got it finished, it will be a great pictures frame!
